"...Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." James 2:17
Honduras Mission Trip
Our first time hearing about the work being done in Honduras through UMW was at a Lenten series based on mission work. At the time, Parrish Jones was our interim minister. Each Wednesday, a different missionary or group was invited to talk to us about what their mission was. One week Bob Aazzarito brought Shin Fujiyama along with some other students to talk to us about their experience in Honduras and what he wanted to continue doing for them. He was organizing a walkathon to raise money. Those of us there were so amazed and touched by this college student and his passion. John and Bonnie Snyder went down to the first walkathon to witness the growing interest among the college students and surrounding community to support Shin’s efforts to help at Coprome Orphanage. Over the next year Bob and his students, led by Shin, came back to speak to us about Honduras. By this time a group had been formed called Students Helping Honduras. This group was spreading to other college campuses as well. The Shepards, the Dudeks, Zoe Nichols and others raised money and walked in the second walkathon for Honduras. Our mission committee gave financial support to SHH's efforts as well. Our church has continued to have a relationship with this group. Last spring a large group from our church walked in the walkathon, again held on the campus of UMW. Bob and Shin came to preach this fall. Shin wanted to thank us for our constant support and encouragement. He awarded our church the first annual philanthropy award from the SHH. He also told us a house being built in Honduras is being named after Summit and a scholarship for girls continuing their eduation has been named after Summit. He then challenged us to send a group from our church to Honduras. That's where we're at now.......planning our first mission trip to Honduras! Bob and Shin are helping us with the arrangements and will accompany our group on the weeklong mission trip, June 19-26, 2009.
S.H.H. (Students Helping Honduras) Summit has given funds to enable students to travel there to build homes for families in need and to help out at an orphanage. Summit received recognition from SHH for all our contributions. A scholarship will be given to a student in Summit’s name as well as a home will be built for a needy family and will be called “Summit.”
